Ways Reporters Can Avoid Conflicts of Interest

Hard-news reporters should approach stories objectively, setting their own prejudices and preconceptions aside in order to discover the truth about whatever theyre covering. An important part of objectivity is avoiding conflicts of interest that might influence a reporters work. Examples of Conflict of Interest Avoiding conflict of interest is sometimes easier said than done. Heres an example: Lets say you cover city hall, and over time you get to know the mayor well because hes a big part of your beat. You may even grow to like him and secretly wish for him to be successful as the towns chief executive. Theres nothing wrong with that per se, but if your feelings begin to color your coverage of the mayor, or renders you unable to write about him critically when necessary, then clearly theres a conflict of interest — one that must be resolved. Why must reporters be mindful of this? Because sources often try to influence journalists in order to get more positive coverage. For example, after interviewing the CEO of a major airline for a profile, I got a call from one of the airlines public relations people. She asked how the article was going, then offered me two round-trip tickets to London, courtesy of the airline. Its hard to say no to free airline tickets, but of course, I had to refuse. Accepting them would have been a big-time conflict of interest, one that might have affected the way I wrote the story. In short, avoiding conflicts of interest requires a conscious effort on the part of a reporter, day in and day out. How to Avoid Conflicts of Interest Here are six ways to avoid such conflicts: Dont Accept Freebies or Gifts From Sources. People will often try to curry favor with reporters by offering them gifts of various sorts. But taking such freebies opens the reporter up to the charge that he can be bought.Dont Donate Money to Political or Activist Groups. Many news organizations have rules against this for obvious reasons — it telegraphs where the reporter stands politically and erodes the confidence readers have in the reporter as an impartial observer. Even opinion journalists can get into trouble for giving money to political groups or candidates, as Keith Olbermann did in 2010.Dont Engage in Political Activity. This goes along with No. 2. Dont attend rallies, wave signs or otherwise publicly lend your support to groups or causes that have a political bent. Non-political charitable work is fine.Dont Get Too Chummy With the People You Cover. Its important to establish a good working relationship with the sources on your beat. But theres a fine line between a w orking relationship and a true friendship. If you become best friends with a source youre not likely to cover that source objectively. The best way to avoid such pitfalls? Dont socialize with sources outside of work.Dont Cover Friends or Family Members. If you have a friend or relative who is in the public spotlight — lets say your sister is a member of the city council — you must recuse yourself from covering that person as a reporter. Readers simply wont believe that youll be as tough on that person as you are on everyone else — and theyll probably be right.Avoid Financial Conflicts. If you cover a prominent local company as part of your beat, you shouldnt own any of that companys stock. More broadly, if you cover a certain industry, say, drug companies or computer software makers, then you shouldnt own stock in those kinds of companies.

Jealousy, it is what gets the best and, of course, the worst of people. Iago in Shakespeares play Othello is one of the worst villains out there. Other villains, such as Scar in Disneys The Lion King, Jafar in Disneys Aladdin, and Mother Gothel from Disneys Tangled have closely related motives and jealous personalities. All four betray and kill for reasons they believe are going to further the lives they intend to lead after their master plans. Mother Gothel goes back on her word because she steals a child from a kingdom and makes it her own to gain her youth from Rapunzels hair. Gothel never tells Rapunzel about her life back in town as the daughter of the king and queen. She feeds Rapunzel lies to get her to live with her. She does not want Rapunzel to live out her dreams and leave her because without Rapunzels magic hair she has no way of turning young again. In Aladdin, Jafar is trying to retrieve a magic lamp so, he seeks help from a young boy. The young boy named Aladdin and, he has to venture down into The Cave of Wonders. Boats are used in a subtle metaphor for women and sexuality in Beowulf. The boats Beowulf sails upon are described with surprisingly sensual language that stands out from the rest of the poem’s descriptions. The author writes of the â€Å"foam at her neck†, â€Å"her curved prow†, and his intention to â€Å"ply the waves†, all of which seem sensually coded. It is a small detail that boats, graceful and powerful objects, use female pronouns in Beowulf, but it is interesting. Using feminine pronouns mixed with vague sensuality shows some admiration and appreciation of female sexuality. There are more explicit parts of the poem that could have had some sensual detailing, but instead, those moments are coyly and respectfully handled. Again according to Halbouni, Obeid and Garbou, 2016, Small and Medium sized Enterprise has been the most benefitted scope of the field as the Small and Medium sized Enterprises do not have the facilities to have a check on the business executives with the help of the technologies. Hence after the inclusion of the Corporate Governance Code the rate of frauds have decreased to a great extent causing the growth in the revenue collection of the Small and Medium sized Enterprises. The Corporate Governance code is applicable only for the organizations that are registered in the government execution processes. On having the business registered to the corporate governance code the organization can stay protected from the frauds that has been happening in the United Arab Emirates. Detecting fraud According to El Bodan, Aga and Alrub, 2017, the techniques that help in the process of detecting frauds in the corporate sectors of the United Arab Emirates that encompasses the technological systems that utilizes the manual and automated technologies to detect the main hindrances that occurs in the processing off the detection of the tracking of the fraud cases that take places in the processing of the business. On applying constrains of the system of the automated systems a drastic reduction in the fraud cases has been detected. This detection of the fraud cases in a more efficient order as this technology reduces the verbal ability of the human errors. Due to the fact of reducing the human error in the corporate sector, the chances of reducing the fraud cases decrease with the initiation of the project. Again according to Visser and Tolhurst 2017, Enterprise Resource Planning applications that uses the platform o SAP and Oracle is widely used by the manufacturing companies of the United Arab Emirates. This application acts as the major reason of protection from the fraud cases that has been happening in the United Arab emirates. The companies do not follow the methodologies of the security processes, they instead have installed the automated version of the Enterprise Resource Planning application that has been used as a platform for serving the organization from the processing of the fraud detection with the least error execution rate. Development of Corporate governance in the public sector According to Bodolica, Spraggon and Zaid 2015, the governance committee of the Abu Dhabi was established through the Resolution no 17 of the year 2010. This committee takes into consideration the formation of the formation of the laws that are needed to be constructed in order to deal with the frauds that has been taking place in the corporate sector. The United Arab Emirates government has recruited external bodies who are experts in the field of fraud detection. This services are the main reasons for the installation of the framework of the organizational and the individual development of the United Arab Emirates public sector. Responsibilities of the board Abdullah, Percy and Stewart 2015, in their journal stated that the boards that deal with the fraud detection technology are having an important role to play for the success of the business organizations in the United Arab Emirates. The committee boards are responsible for the detection of the frauds that has been taking place in the corporate sectors of the United Arab Emirates. This committee acts strategically in order to reduce the fraud cases that has been happening in the sectors that affects transparency of the business environment. Again according to Garas, Tessema and Tee, 2017, the board of committee members must be well acknowledged with the details and the knowledge of the organizations that are registered under them. This knowledge regarding the companies under their infrastructure helps them to gain control over the fraud cases that occur. This details can also help in estimating the potential fraud case that can occur due to the weak infrastructural module of the indust ry. Having the details of the company it helps the committee can warn the organization of the problems that can occur due to the imposters that are trying to pierce the wall of defense of the organization and harm the organization. Statement of problem The statement of the task is The Usage of the Corporate Governance to prevent fraud cases in United Arab Emirates. Hypothesis question Hypothesis 1 H0: Corporate Governance is not helpful for reducing the fraud cases that has been occurring in the United Arab Emirates. H1: Corporate Governance is helpful for reducing the fraud cases that has been occurring in the United Arab Emirates. Methodology The methodology that has been used for the research of the project is Qualitative in nature. Qualitative research methodology is a broad means of research process that intends to complete the research of project using the means that are available through the literature manifested in the respective topic of research title (Mansor, 2017). The qualitative research is done by going through the sources of information that has been already generated by other personnel on whom one individual can rely on referencing for the entire process (Nobanee and Ellili, 2017). Manual survey regarding the processing of the project is not taken into consideration for the qualitative way of research methodology (Shehata, 2016). Introduction This paper develops an intelligent approach by comparing two planning models stated in two literature works. The plan is a statement of actual steps carried out by an organisation in order to achieve its objective. When an organisation begins to identify specific outcomes the planning process is said to have begun. Different targets maybe set by an organisation when a change in the environment is encountered. At the same time the organisations may make a plan of action to stabilise the working environment. The further sections of the report will discuss sequential steps taken into account for systematic planning. Planning Models a. The process of systematic planning is as follows:- b. efining the objective the desired outcomes should be specified in such a way that it depicts basically where one wants to go c. Determining where the person lies in relation with his/her objectives evaluation of current accomplishments should be done by knowing ones strength and weaknesses d. Developing Scenario by considering future aspects future events should be anticipated by generating various scenarios. e. Analyse among alternative actions list of events may be generated by careful evaluation in order to make proper plan f. Two types of planning document were studied in which the first was able to set out local needs and strategy was made to meet those needs, in general terms the basic plan have been directed to the individual readership at different level for those who were basically interested in the authority related work - the users and providers of health services along with organizations that are run locally and their working was affected by the planning of health authority (John M. In three consecutive years various differences were seen in the plans at the time of execution The secondary document related to plan, which can be called as 'the Contract', was used to be produced at various different stage in the years that specified the various activities to be adapted by the authorities in particular upcoming years as it was required by regional health authority containing the next tier in the health service. The Contract was then directed to various health service providers that had well established transparent working action of plan, which were structured by reviewing the region of local health society. The Contract document was then systematically arranged so that it may become easy to plan something because that contract identified and highlighted success criteria and key tasks with dates specified to complete them. Strategic planning is a process of defining the strategy and decisions taken in a direction to make use of resources by allocating their usage at proper place. It may also be known be control mechanisms for guiding and implementing particular strategies. This type of planning came to prominence in 1960s and from then was known to be an important aspect till strategic management (Michael Allison, Jude Kaye 2005). The plan may be executed by various strategists, involving various parties and sources related to research in the analysis of organization and its respective relationship with its environment.
